This week on Maker Parent Happy Hour we celebrate the original makers – moms! Join this group of creative, talented women to talk about what they love to make, the challenges of making with and without kids, and the things that get them motivated to make as a family. Join in the conversation about how making, doing, building together (successes and failures) creates meaningful experiences. Diana Eng is a fashion tech designer who got her start on the TV show Project Runway, and spent 10 years working in the NYC fashion industry. A tinkerer in her spare time, she cofounded NYC Resistor, one of the first hackerspaces in the US. Diana was a contributor to MAKE and CRAFT magazine, early Maker Faires, and was the ham radio correspondent for Makezine.com. As a fashion designer, Diana has worked with companies and universities to develop experimental concepts and bring new technologies, materials, and manufacturing techniques to market, including nanotechnology, electronics, biomimetics, 3D knitting, thermochromic inks, laser cutting, retroreflective ink, and ultrasonic welding. She has also used fashion technology as a way to introduce STEM education to children, as an artist in residence at Eyebeam, a mentor on PBS SciGirls, and a teaching artist at MoMA. Currently, she is developing STEM Chat, a video series, in collaboration with Natalie Zee Drieu. Diana loves to make things with her two kids. She was the Editor in Chief of CRAFT magazine (published by Maker Media) where millions of women got inspired by crafting movement at the intersection of science and technology. As an early member of this community, her active participation in numerous Maker Faires and TV shows was instrumental in igniting the DIY revolution. Prior to Maker Media, Natalie was a leading influencer in web design working for Macromedia and cutting-edge design agencies where she spearheaded innovative projects for Fortune 500 brands. More recently, she has been focusing her expertise and passion on STEM with Adventures in Tinkering (tinkerbinker.com), an online book with DIY projects for young girls, and STEM Chat, a video series in collaboration with Diana Eng.
